GMC's Hummer brand is an all-time classic that stands for both extreme power and rugged design. However, Hummer vehicles were also known for their extravagant fuel consumption, and the nameplate was dropped in 2010 as gas-guzzling vehicles fell firmly out of favour.
But modern electric technology means the vehicle is back under the name of GMC Hummer EV with two body formats paired for a thoroughly modern lineup. The 2022 Hummer EV will first appear as a high-powered pickup, with an SUV version following shortly after.
Hummer EV Trim Levels
The Hummer EV will at first only be available in a high-end trim labelled Edition 1, offering the full performance level and feature set that the design is capable of. Later trims will follow, likely in 2023 and 2024, available at lower prices, and with reduced levels of performance and pared-back lists of features.
Comparison: The Hummer EV Pickup vs Hummer EV SUV
Despite their differences in body format, the Hummer EV pickup and SUV versions share a large number of their specifications. Here's what you need to know about the two vehicles, their similarities, and their differences.
High-End Powertrain and Performance
Both the pickup and SUV versions of the Hummer EV are built around three electric motors powering all-wheel drive. However, the specifications and performance figures differ slightly between the two.
The SUV version offers a mammoth 830 horsepower, capable of powering the rugged body with confident ease. However, the pickup exceeds even that output, with its maximum horsepower just breaking into four figures at 1,000hp. Even better, both Hummer EV models boast a torque rating of 11,500lb-ft, delivered with the characteristic instant surge of all-electric vehicles.
That output is enough to rocket the truck from 0-100km/h in a searing 3.0 seconds, a staggering level of acceleration for any vehicle, let alone a pickup.
But raw performance is only half of the story for an electric vehicle, no matter how impressive the specs look. The good electric driving range is essential for everyday utility, and both the truck and SUV offer excellent figures here. Both feature 800V DC fast charging capability, adding up to 129km in just ten minutes, with an estimated range of 560km for the truck and 480km for the SUV. Safe to say, neither of these EVs will provoke much range anxiety in their drivers.
And lastly, while the towing capacity for the SUV hasn't yet been confirmed, the pickup can haul a healthy 3,409kg in trailer weight, backed up by 591kg in the payload.
Off-Road Abilities
The rugged design, extreme power, and all-wheel drive mean that both Hummer EV models can venture off-road with confidence. However, there are two specific features that move the SUV into the genuine trail-beating territory.
First, a revolutionary “Crabwalk” system uses four-wheel steering to allow diagonal driving at up to 10 degrees, making short work of the tightest trails. Second, a unique Extraction Mode raises the suspension by up to 15.2cm to help rise above obstacles in the SUV's path.
What's more, both models feature extensive under-body protection with steel plates and shields around the differential and battery pack, helping to traverse even the most challenging terrains in safety. The 35” Goodyear Wrangler All Territory tires provide full ruggedness for off-road adventuring, while also optimized for smooth on-pavement performance. And lastly, the available transparent roof panels create a truly immersive driving experience that's perfect for exploring wilderness trails.
Dimensions Comparison
Both versions of the Hummer EV are substantial vehicles, and share a five-passenger capacity along with many of their main dimensions. However, the pickup's 152.4cm cargo bed means it's a little longer, and it also has a slightly higher overall profile.
Technology and Safety Features
Lastly, while the Hummer's main focus may be on rugged power, it also includes a generous amount of interior and safety technology. Key highlights include:
• 12.3” digital driver information center alongside a 13.4” infotainment touchscreen.
• Bose 14-speaker audio system featuring CenterPoint surround sound.
• Super Cruise driver assistance technology with hands-free driving and automatic lane-changing ability.
